Engineering is a stream in education that combines Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation to design, build, maintain, and improve machines, structures, software, systems, and processes. Engineering offers many career opportunities in all industries. This is why it is one of the most desired courses for students after 12th grade, especially for those who are part of the Science stream.

According to AICTE statistics, the country has 5917 engineering and tech institutes with an annual intake of 23,61.753 candidates. According to the 2018-19 All India Survey of Higher Education, (AISHE), which is powered by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Engineering has 37.70 million students enrolled at the undergraduate level. Engineering and Technology have 71.1 percent of male students, while female enrollment is at 28.9%.

Engineering students can choose from over 100 specializations. The most popular include Computer Science Engineering and Civil Engineering.

Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Information Technology are just a few of the top institutes for engineering. Shiksha says that there are over 3,500 colleges in India offering engineering programs.

Eligibility for Engineering Degrees

There are different criteria for eligibility to be admitted to engineering programs. Students must have completed 12th grade with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Many institutes require that students have a minimum of 12th grade marks. This percentage varies from one institute to the next. Some institutes also have minimum and maximum age requirements for engineering course admission.

Students must also have a medical clearance before they can be admitted to courses like Marine Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering. The entrance exam is the most common way to allocate seats at engineering institutes. Many institutes offer admission based upon the merit of 12th grade. You can find here a wide range of eligibility requirements.

Engineering Entrance Exams

Many Indian engineering colleges select applicants based on their entrance exam scores and ranks. Some technical institutes will accept All India Ranks (AIR) obtained in national level exams. Others conduct entrance exams. These are the most popular engineering exams in India, both at the UG- and PG levels.
